Solar & Battery Buying Guide Sydney
Clear questions. Better comparisons. A system planned around your property.
Ultravolt Solar Services · Sydney buyer resources
A good solar quote should make your decision easier. Use this guide to explain what you want, compare the details that matter and prepare for your installation.
Whether you are starting with solar, adding a battery or planning for an electric vehicle, begin with your property’s energy use and the outcome you want. Ultravolt can help you work through the options for your Sydney home or business.
What would you like your system to do?
I want solar for my home
Tell us when you use electricity, what roof space is available and whether your needs are likely to change.

Request a service assessmentPrepare for a more useful quote
- Recent electricity bills: include usage and tariff details, not just the total amount due.
- Your daily routine: tell us when people are home or the business is operating.
- Existing equipment: include panel, inverter and battery models if you already have a system.
- Property information: share your suburb, roof type, access considerations and any ownership or strata approvals needed.
- Future plans: mention an EV, pool, renovation or changes in household size.
- Your priorities: explain whether you are focused on electricity costs, backup, a future upgrade or a combination.
Send photos you can take safely from ground level. You do not need to climb onto the roof or open electrical equipment to request a quote.
Choose solar around your household, not a package label
Start with a year of bills or interval usage if available. Separate daytime consumption from evening demand and list planned changes such as air conditioning, an EV or a battery. Your panel array is rated in kW; its energy production over a day is measured in kWh. These are different figures.
Ask the installer to explain the proposed roof layout, panel capacity and inverter rating. Request generation estimates that account for orientation, shading and seasonal conditions, along with the assumptions behind any savings forecast. Check the proposal against the Australian Government solar design guidance.
Panels, inverter and the site assessment
- Are the exact panel and inverter models identified, with their manufacturer warranty documents?
- How has shading from trees or neighbouring buildings been considered?
- What roof condition, access, cable routing and switchboard work need assessment?
- Which network approvals or export limits affect the design, and who arranges them?
- For strata or shared property, who must approve the work before installation?
For a Sydney home, our residential solar installation team can discuss the information needed to prepare your proposal.
Install a battery now or plan for later?
Ask for solar-only and combined options with their inclusions clearly separated. If you defer the battery, request the exact future compatibility assumptions in writing: which battery models are supported, whether the inverter needs replacement and what extra work backup would require. “Battery-ready” should be the start of that conversation, rather than a guarantee that any future battery will connect.
Compare the whole quote, not just the headline price
Equipment and design
Ask for exact model names, the proposed layout and a clear explanation of why that design suits your property. Check what is included if an inverter change or switchboard work is proposed.
Installation and exclusions
Check access requirements, metering arrangements, any network approval steps, likely timing and possible additional costs. Ask how changes to the agreed scope will be handled.
Estimates and assumptions
Ask which electricity rates, usage patterns and generation assumptions are used in any estimate. Treat an estimated saving as a forecast for those assumptions, rather than a guaranteed bill.
Warranty and support
Keep workmanship and equipment warranties separate when comparing offers. Ultravolt provides a 10-year workmanship warranty; manufacturer product warranties depend on the equipment supplied and its terms.
Adding a battery to existing solar
A battery can store surplus solar energy for later use. The proposed connection needs to suit your existing system; keeping the current inverter may be possible, but compatibility needs to be checked.
Compare usable storage in kWh with power output in kW. Storage capacity describes how much energy can be held; output affects which appliances can run together. Backup is a separate design question: a battery does not automatically power the whole home during a blackout.
Ask which circuits would be supported, what equipment is required and how your priorities affect the design. The Australian Government’s battery consumer guide explains these distinctions.
Read our Sydney battery installation and rebate guide for the next steps. Confirm the incentive amount and eligibility in your written quote before proceeding.
Size storage for the energy you actually want to move
Consider how much solar you export, your evening electricity use and the loads you want supported. Compare usable capacity in kWh with continuous output in kW. Ask the installer to explain why their proposed size suits those needs, including how much capacity is reserved for backup and how operating settings affect normal use.
Request a separate comparison for a smaller and larger option where practical. Compare the full installed cost, warranty conditions and expected use of the storage, rather than assuming the largest battery offers the best value. Independent Your Home battery guidance can help with this decision.
Make backup a written part of the scope
List the appliances you need most during an outage. Ask which circuits and phases will be supplied, the output and starting-load limits, and whether solar can recharge the battery while the grid is down. Essential-load and whole-home backup are different installation scopes. Confirm the limits for your particular equipment and home.
For a three-phase home, ask for a clear explanation of normal operation versus outage operation. Single-phase battery backup covers circuits on that phase; do not assume it runs three-phase appliances. Our battery installation page explains retrofit connection and backup questions.
Check incentives before accepting a quote
Official sources checked 2 October 2026. Eligible batteries may receive a discount through the Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program. Eligibility, installation date, usable capacity and certificate value affect the discount. Ask for the actual eligible amount to be itemised separately.
A separate NSW virtual power plant incentive may apply. Compare the provider’s contract, access to your battery, payments and retailer requirements. VPP capability and choosing to join a VPP are different decisions.
Agree on the installation steps
- Assessment: supply bills, equipment details and safe photos, then confirm what must be inspected.
- Written scope: agree on equipment, location, electrical upgrades, backup arrangements, exclusions and approval responsibilities.
- Installation planning: confirm access, timing and any expected interruption to electricity.
- Commissioning and handover: ask for monitoring access, operating guidance, warranty documents and support contacts.
Ultravolt Solar Services was established in 2019, uses an in-house electrical installation team and provides a 10-year workmanship warranty. Equipment warranties are separate. Learn about our team or request a quote for your Sydney property.
Planning for an electric vehicle?
Explore our EV charger installation service in Sydney for home charging, solar integration enquiries and the details to send for a quote.
If you have an EV or expect to buy one, include it in your solar enquiry. Tell us the vehicle model, your usual driving pattern, where you park and when the car is normally at home. Ask how the proposed system would support your charging routine and what a future charger assessment would need to cover.
This helps avoid choosing a system around today’s household needs alone. Any charger supply, installation or integration should be confirmed separately in the agreed scope.
Keep an installation handover folder
Before the job is complete, ask the installer to walk you through the finished system and confirm what you will receive. Keep these items together:
- The final equipment list and relevant installation documents.
- Product manuals, warranty terms and the installation invoice.
- Your monitoring app details and a demonstration of the available views.
- An explanation of any backup circuits and the system’s operating limits.
- Who to contact about a fault, warranty question or monitoring issue.
- Any outstanding metering, retailer or network follow-up steps.
For an existing system issue, use our solar maintenance and fault assessment page to prepare the information we need.
Questions Sydney customers often ask
Should I install solar and a battery together?
Tell us your budget, current equipment and priorities. Ask for clearly separated options so you can compare solar alone, a combined system or a staged upgrade for your property.
Can you give me a fixed price from one electricity bill?
A bill is a useful starting point. A written quote also needs to account for the proposed equipment, property conditions and installation scope. We will explain any information or assessment needed before confirming the work.
How do I compare two batteries with different capacities?
Ask each provider to explain why their proposed size suits your usage and to show usable capacity, output, backup scope and warranty terms together. A larger advertised capacity alone does not answer those questions.
Do you assess enquiries outside Sydney?
Our focus is Sydney. If your property is in regional NSW, include your location and project details so we can confirm availability before arranging an assessment.
